At Riverlink Disability Services, we proudly joined the celebration of International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on 3rd December. This globally recognised day, established by the United Nations, shines a spotlight on the rights, well-being, and achievements of people with disability, fostering a more inclusive and diverse society.
Why Do We Celebrate International Day of People with Disability?
IDPwD is a time to reflect on the progress made towards inclusion and to recognise the contributions of people with disability in every facet of life. It reminds us of the importance of creating a society where everyone is valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.
In Australia, this day is a collaborative effort, bringing together government bodies, schools, businesses, organisations, and individuals to promote inclusion and raise awareness. Through these united efforts, we move closer to a future where diversity is celebrated, and barriers to participation are broken down.
The Importance of IDPwD
IDPwD is not just about celebration—it’s a call to action. The day serves to:
- Raise awareness: Highlight the challenges people with disability face and the importance of addressing them.
- Promote inclusion: Encourage communities to embrace diversity and remove barriers to participation.
- Inspire leadership: Recognise and amplify the voices of people with disability as leaders shaping the future.
- Align with national goals: IDPwD aligns with Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021–2031, which aims to increase understanding and acceptance of people with disability while promoting their rights and inclusion in all areas of life.
Building a More Inclusive Future
This year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” highlights the vital role people with disability play as leaders and change makers. As a society, we must continue to advocate for greater representation in leadership roles, ensuring diverse perspectives drive progress.
At Riverlink, we are committed to supporting this vision by empowering individuals, fostering inclusive communities, and advocating for change. Together, we can build a future where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive.
Be Part of the Change
Creating a truly inclusive and diverse Australia requires action from all of us. Whether by fostering inclusive workplaces, supporting disability advocacy, or simply learning more about the challenges faced by people with disability, everyone has a role to play.
Visit the International Day of People with Disability website to learn more about this important day and how you can contribute to creating an inclusive society.
